We love making documentaries in Manchester. Not just talking about ideas. We want to make the films we believe in and make them happen.
So, Films Not Words was born. Enough talking, let’s crack on and make documentaries about some of the amazing people on our doorstep. Even better, let’s make them with the talented crew who live and work here.
And, just like the city we belong in, we want to do things differently. We want to redress the balance, on and off screen, offering more opportunities to crew outside London and greater representation of women behind and in front of the camera....
Founded in 2023 by BAFTA winner Helen Tither, we released our first feature-length independent documentary The Corinthians: We Were The Champions into cinemas in Feb 2026. The amazing real-life story of the original rebel girls of football, who defied The FA's ban on women playing, it had a sell-out cinema run and hit national headlines.
The film sparked a campaign that led to The FA apologising to the Corinthians players for the ban on women playing. It has since been nominated in the Best Sports Documentary category in The Grierson Awards 2026 (aka the British Documentary Awards).
Following an amazing cinema run - with sell-out screenings at HOME MCR and a run at The Light cinema chain - we were delighted when The Corinthians We Were The Champions was acquired by the BBC.
First screened on BBC FOUR in May, when it was listed as Critic's Choice in The Sunday Times it is now available to view on BBC iPlayer.
"A lovely piece of documentary making – 90 minutes (no extra time) of no-nonsense, very funny talking heads, threaded together with archive footage, comic-book style animations and visits back to Fog Lane." - The Observer
"Hugely inspiring" - Radio Times
"This defiant documentary tells their story. Inspirational." - TV Times
